There was a buzz of excitement at the Sikhula Sonke offices on Friday morning when we received the news that Phila, a child who was identified through our Family Community Motivator programme and living with disability, has been granted ‘wheels’ by the Red Cross hospital. The Sikhula Sonke board heard of Phila’s situation at the end of last year and wanted to buy her a wheelchair, but were advised to seek a professional opinion on her condition first. Ann Bullen from Chaeli Campaign immediately assisted with the necessary assessments and referrals, which led to Phila being booked for operations by specialists at the Red Cross Hospital. Unfortunately she missed the cardiology appointments due to complications at home, but the Sikhula Sonke team intervened and got the DSD involved, and the outcome is that Phila’s appointment has been set up for end of June.
Sikhula Sonke would like to extend a special word of thanks to Ann Bullen of the Chaeli Compaign for her assistance and for referring us to an appropriate school for Phila. Thank you to Shona McDonald of ShonaQuip who offered physiotherapy assessments and more, to Connect Network who also offered to donate a wheelchair, and to Cathi for her referral to Shonaquip. Sikhula Sonke is very proud to have facilitated such an exciting success story. Mdebuka Mtwazi, Thembi Nxesi, and the FCM fieldworkers work tirelessly to ensure that children like Phila are identified, stimulated and encouraged to live life with confidence. We are thankful to join hands with so many passionate organisations to make a difference once child, one woman, one community at a time!
