Sikhula Sonke ECD and partners VPUU (Violence Prevention Through Urban Upgrading), Monwabisi Park Football Association, Love Life, Mosaic, Monwabisi ECD forum, City of Cape Town and Nal’ibali together hosted a free event for residents of Khayelitsha on Saturday 24 September, Heritage Day. The festivities kicked off at 9 am at the Monwabisi Park Container Facility in C-Section. Events included Football & Netball Tournaments, Traditional Dances, Children’s indigenous games, Reading & Storytelling activities and Community Dialogues around life and health issues. Story telling - thanks to Nal'ibali facilitators - at the Toy Bus was followed by eating time and party packs. Open dialogues took place with parents, community leaders and teenagers talking about what perpetrates gender based violence. We had a wonderful day together celebrating the richness of our cultures and diversity of the people who live in Khayelitsha. Thank you to all our partners and staff who worked so hard behind the scenes to make this a memorable and fun-filled day.

Sikhula Sonke, in partnership with Joint Aid Management (JAM) and German volunteers, embarked on another ECD facility makeover. Bukwayo Educare now has a new fence, a fully-equipped kitchen, proper sanitation and toilets, fully equipped classrooms, jungle gyms, slides, shade with artificial grass and more. Joint Aid Management funded the makeover which entailed dismantling the old structure, building a new structure, installing equipment for the classrooms and kitchen, setting up a new playground and building new bathrooms. The Sikhula Sonke team of Buyiswa, Ntosh, Bukie, Mpho, Nomathemba and Lindiswa prepared breakfast and hot meals every day for the volunteers who invested their skills (and their hearts) in this project. Finally, the handover! The Harare Square Spar kindly baked a cake for the occasion and all the stakeholders and volunteers met for a wonderful and emotional ribbon-cutting ceremony. Thank you to the Sikhula Sonke team for being so instrumental in dismantling the old structure, participating in erecting the new structure as well as cooking nice meals for the volunteers who were constructing this center.
A special thank you to Joint Aid Management nutritional program for financing the project. It is a privilege to work with JAM: together in partnership we can do much much more. |
